DISCOVER : OUR MISSION

The mission of Colorado Discover Ability is to increase the independence, self-confidence, self worth and education of people with disabilities through outdoor recreation.

Our Story

Colorado Discover Ability, (CDA), was incorporated in 1980 as the Powderhorn Handicapped Ski Program, Ltd., a non-profit corporation. CDA was initially established to provide educational and therapeutic outdoor experiences to the disabled population in western Colorado, solely through alpine skiing at Powderhorn Ski Resort. Prior to CDA’s existence, disabled individuals in the Grand Valley had no local options for proper training and guidance in adaptive outdoor recreation. In 1987, our name was changed to reflect our vision to provide recreational opportunities in other sports as well. CDA continues to be responsible for the delivery of all adaptive ski and snowboard instruction at Powderhorn.

We began in 2001 to expand into year-round recreational programs and updated our mission to reflect the inclusion of our client’s families and friends. During the summer, CDA’s focus shifts to providing water-based recreation, such as river rafting and related camping activities. CDA has been offering summer Day Camps for children and teens since 2001. With the collaboration of St. Mary’s Hospital and Rocky Mountain Orthopedics’ therapy staff, a multi-day Camp Freedom for children age 6-12 was added in 2004. Besides the regular programs, various clinics like adaptive cycling have offered locals an access to popular activities on the western slope.

CDA is a member Paralympic Sports Club of the United States Olympic Committee.

A Colorado State graduate looking for adventure, Sarah moved from Glenwood Springs to Grand Junction in 2016. From there Sarah became a ski instructor for CDA’s winter sports program and also became involved in helping with events and fundraising. In addition to her involvement with CDA, she has worked with programs such as Strive/Mesa County Developmental Services which provides direct support for those with disabilities. In 2018, she was the assistant program director for CDA’s Adventure Camp. Sarah loves to do anything outdoors and believes outdoor recreation is key to a healthy lifestyle. She now works as the Program Coordinator for the snow sports program and is a snow sports instructor at Powderhorn Ski Resort, located on the Grand Mesa.”

Penny Martens

Penny joined the CDA team in April 2022. She brings with her many years’ experience with office management and all things organizational. She looks forward to getting to know all the many people involved with CDA. When not working Penny enjoys being outside canyoneering, hiking, and camping. “There’s nothing like wind, water and sun on your face to set things right.”

Jeremy Steinhauer

Program Assistant
My name is Jeremy Steinhauer and I was very fortunate to have spent 4 years running CDA programs from 2009 – 2013. Since my time with CDA I got married to a wonderful gal named Elizabeth, had a baby boy named Dakota, and spent some time in the medical field as a Radiologic Technologist. I have truly missed my time with CDA and look forward to this opportunity to come back to CDA and share my passion for the outdoors with all of you.
